Purple Bed—is it for you?

Looking for a new bed?  A little insight into the consumer experience of shopping online for an environmental option.

The Purple Mattress 360 Degree Experience

Shopping for a bed is [insert word here].  I’ve been doing research on and off for awhile.  I knew it was time to buy Conner a new bed, past due.  I have a framework for what / why I buy something.  The key attributes for the new bed:

  • Comfort (obviously)
  • Organic or quality materials that don’t off-gas
  • Sustainability
  • Ease of doing business
  • Cost
  • Delivery

I am not a shopper, really for anything, so I put this off a little too long.

I choose a Purple mattress.. The entry point into the Purple Mattress World ended up being about 1255.00 with the Purple mattress including the Foundation.  I am considering buying a new larger mattress (King) so I thought let’s see how this goes.

Comfort

So, far Conner loves his new mattress! However, I’m not sure that says much given the shape of his old mattress.  Maybe I’ll sneak in a nap on his bed for my personal review.  From what I understand the Purple is great for side sleepers, co-sleepers, and hot sleepers based on the technology.

Organic or Materials of a Certain Quality

According to Purple’s website, we spend 30% of our life in our beds.  A bed is different to me than let’s say a couch, where I spend time, but not 30% of my time.  Buying organic materials is not always the most affordable option, therefore I look at what I am purchasing the item for ... and in this case spending 30% of our time.  Something that did not off gas was very important.

Sustainability

This I am not 100% sure of, yet.  The Purple Bed came with a lot of plastic, which they say is recyclable, but I would prefer to have less plastic or be able to stuff it in the purple bag and send it back.  The mattress is America made, which likely had pros/cons, but at least it was not shipped around the world to make it to my door.

Ease of Doing Business

The ease of buying -- super easy once you know what you want.  It was delivered late, but that was the weather’s fault, it was during the PacNW deep freeze. It just arrived.  No in-store shopping.  Based on research from Gartner 33% of buyers don’t want to talk to sellers, they want a seller-less experience.  And, millennials, it's 40%.  I loved not having to go to a mattress store is some smarmy strip mall. And, avoiding  a conversation with someone who I don’t trust to sell me a mattress.

Cost

I thought that it would be less expensive than it was giving the overhead -- buying direct, and no salespeople or showroom.  Looking online for comparisons I see that there are mattresses from 150 up to 1500.

Set-Up

This is always a big question mark for me.  How hard is it going to be to set-up?  For many DIYers and the handy types, this is not an issue, but for me, it’s a big deal.  The frame and the mattress came separately.  I was able to carry both packages (separately :) into the house.  Dave is uber-handy so I wanted for him to help me set the bed up.  See video.  While he was able to do it probably in 30 minutes, I could have done it in 90, maybe less.  It was easy.

Old Beds

If you have an old bed you want to get rid of— Purple does not take them, but offers ideas on what to do with them, recycling, upcycling would be best.

I've purchased mattresses in the store, always, but this was seamless, easy -- just the way I like it.  What I did not like is the purple bag that I now have no idea what to do with.
