New to Dirt Bikes, We've Got You

Get ready for dirt bike riding in 2023!

Getting started can be daunting, but it does not have to be.

If you’re a new rider, getting the right dirt bike for your experience level is key. Many bikes on the market are designed for experienced riders and can be difficult to handle if you’re just starting out. When shopping for a dirt bike, keep in mind your size and riding style as well as budget, terrain type, and power. Or ask us, we can help you!

For beginner riders, it’s best to select a bike with a mid-range power output and suspension package appropriate for your size and terrain, but It should also have an adjustable seat height, making it easier to find the right fit. While four-stroke models may offer more torque, two-strokes are generally easier to work on and maintain, making them a great option for novice riders.

Our pandemic activity was dirt bike riding. Dave, my boyfriend, is an avid rider and encouraged me and my son to join.  I ended up purchasing a Kawasaki KLX 140, which I am in a love--not ❤️ relationship with.  I am grateful I was able to find it.  During the pandemic bikes were sold out.  But, it's heavy and the wheelbase is too short.  I would definitely in hindsight buy a lighter weight bike with bigger wheels.

My son used his holiday money and and some extra from me and bought Dave's son's bike, a Honda 110. He then outgrew it a year later, sold that bike and got a Yamaha.

Growth Spurts

That is one thing to think through -- growth, your children will likely grow out of there bikes, but you also don't want to put them on a bike that is too big.  We've had no problem selling bikes when the time was right.

I’m grateful (kinda) that I did because it afforded me the opportunity to ride, but now I realize it’s probably not the ideal bike for me.  It’s heavy and the wheelbase is low.

Protective Gear

In addition to the bike itself, you’ll need the right protective gear. Be sure to invest in a quality helmet and padded clothing such as elbow pads, knee guards, and chest protector for added protection. These items should fit comfortably and snugly, allowing you to move freely and safely.  We were watching some YouTubers talk about getting started and he said, you need to get gear. before you ride.  He estimated that basic gear would cost about $1000.  And, that is about what we spent per person.  It confirmed my strategy, which was I went out an bought both of us all the gear we needed.

  • Helmet
  • Boots
  • Knee/Elbow Guards
  • Googles

The last time we were out, I did not have my elbow guards and had an accident. Minor, but had I been wearing my elbow guards I would not have spent time and money in the emergency care.  Why did I not have my elbow guards on? Because, it's heavy and uncomfortable. So, I'm on the lookout for something built for women.

It’s important to have the right gear.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Finally, it’s important to practice your riding skills in a safe environment before tackling any difficult terrain. Take some time to learn the basics of dirt bike safety, including how to ride on different terrains and how to react if things go wrong. With practice and patience, you’ll soon be ready to take your dirt bike off-road and explore the trails.

We ride at Brown’s Camp and there are two loops that we refer to as the kid’s loops.  Every time I start out I practice, get used to my bike, shifting and navigating the terrain because the terrain is different based on the day.

Enjoy!  Reach out if you have questions!
